Travel Important note: Before you travel to Croatia, please take care of any Visa requirements which might apply. It is strongly suggested to check back with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia if any Visa restrictions apply to you at: http://www.mfa.hr/MVP.asp?pcpid=1615
Traveling by Airplane Traveling by airplane is the most convenient way to reach Dubrovnik. Most major European airlines and a couple of charter fleets have connections to Dubrovnik (IATA code: DBV) directly or through Zagreb, the capital of Croatia (IATA code: ZAG). Croatia Airlines, the national carrier, is closely tied to Lufthansa and is also a member of the Star Alliance airline network. However, since there is a great demand for flights to Dubrovnik, it is strongly recommended to book flights as early as possible.
Dubrovnik airport is located about 20 kilometers south of the city. Taxis are available 24/7. In addition, major car rental companies are present and after every regular flight (not charter flights), shuttle busses to the city are available. As an alternative, you might want to fly to Split airport (IATA code: SPU) and drive by rental car southwards along the Adriatic coastline to Dubrovnik (about an 4 hour drive by car).
More information for traveling by airplane: Traveling by Car and/or Boat Ferry If you prefer to travel by car along the beautiful Adriatic coastline, please note that Dubrovnik is located in the very south of Croatia, more than 600 kilometers away from the northern border to Slovenia. In view of the speed limits imposed on most (single-track per direction) routes, this will take some time. As an alternative, Dubrovnik can be reached by car ferry from Bari (Italy) or the northern ports of Croatia (e.g., Rijeka, Zadar, Split). More information:
Traveling by Train This option is not recommended since the train network in southern Croatia is not well developed.
Package Tours and Assistance with Travel Planning A couple of European as well as US-based tour operators offer package tours to the Dubrovnik area, encompassing the trip (mostly by airplane), lodging, and sometimes dishes. In some instances, these offers are cheaper compared to separate trip and hotel bookings. Please check back with your travel agent for an inquiry. Alternatively, the Croatian travel agent ATLAS might assist in planning your trip.
Local Excursions and Organized Tours A variety of excursions and sightseeing tours are offered by local tour operators, e.g. to the Elafiti Islands, the Island of Mljet, and to the Dubrovnik country side. For those preferring adventures, Jeep safaris as well as horseback riding and rafting tours are offered. Last but not least, fish picnics on the boat, visits to vineyards, and village parties can be booked. To get an impression about the offers, please visit: |
